February 2024. The National Technological Institute of Mexico – Conkal (TecNM Campus Conkal) and the American University of Beirut (AUB) have signed a collaboration agreement to implement the project “Universities Can Change the World PHASE II”.

As part of the implementing universities of the Transforming Higher Education model, the main purpose is to train agents of change with leadership, solid technical and scientific knowledge, ethical values, and entrepreneurial spirit committed to society and the environment.

As part of the event, which took place virtually, the highest authorities of the Technological Institute of Mexico – Conkal and representatives of AUB, GCHERA, and the Transforming Higher Education project participated.

“The signing of the agreement between the American University of Beirut and the National Technological Institute of Mexico Campus Conkal, which, although they differ in location and language, converge in vision and essence, is a demonstration of inter-institutional cooperation that reaffirms the commitment to promote the necessary actions to strengthen the training of human resources with leadership, solid technical and scientific knowledge, ethical values, and entrepreneurial spirit committed to society and the environment,” declares Jorge Gamboa, project facilitator at TecNM Campus Conkal.

In November 2023, the second phase of the project was signed, with a commitment of $1 million in investment. The objective is to continue revolutionizing education and consolidate transformative change in the four pilot universities and AUB.

“This collaboration agreement between the American University of Beirut (AUB) and the Technological Institute of Conkal builds on an ongoing relationship based on the mutual interest of improving the quality of their educational institutions and their graduates supported by the Higher Education Institutes Can Change the World project lead by AUB. The agreement will enhance university collaboration in the areas of training, higher education, problem-solving research, entrepreneurship, and community engagement to graduate ethical leaders and agents of change to contribute to rural and entrepreneurial development in Mexico, Lebanon, and globally around the world,” concludes Jim French, director of the Higher Education Transformation project.

In the coming months, the impact of university transformation will be measured, including changes in student and faculty culture, as well as the effects on graduates and rural communities due to the transformation of the educational models of these universities. This phase is scheduled from August 1, 2023, to July 31, 2025.
